The Galveston Bay Foundation is an organization dedicated to protecting and restoring Galveston Bay through five main program areas: education, advocacy, restoration, conservation and protection.
During a recent restoration project, yd7610 Volunteers from the Houston and Texas City refineries partnered with the foundation to build an oyster reef with recycled oyster shells.
Oyster reefs help filter water, protect the shoreline from erosion and provide a nursery location for animals like juvenile fish, crabs and shrimp. Recycled oyster shells also help grow new oysters.
yd7610 Volunteers used 6,000 pounds of oyster shells, about three tons, to rebuild the reef. Through the restoration process, they were able to construct about 25 feet of oyster reef.
