Environmentally Responsible Operations

  • Pwllcrochan Environmental and Community Centre.  Pembroke Refinery acquired the abandoned, deconsecrated church at Pwllcrochan providing the Refinery the opportunity to renovate a 14th century Grade 2 listed building and at the same time manage the adjacent marsh, in line with Pembroke Refinery’s biodiversity and community outreach efforts. The centre is stocked with equipment for school children to explore wildlife in the marsh and nearby woodland.
  • Sulphur Recovery Unit (SRU) upgrades
    • Recover sulphur from the overhead gas from the VDU & FCCU Sour Water Strippers
    • Improved recovery of sulphur by the addition of a Super Claus Reactor
  • Introduction of Natural Gas to the refinery
    • Reduced the requirement to burn fuel oil resulting in reductions in emissions of sulphur dioxide, nitrous oxides, particulates and carbon dioxide
  • Over 9 years, 1.2 millions tonnes of C02 reduced.
